Language Arts Common Core Meeting March 8, 2013
What are we working on? Where are we in our classes?
  • • 7th grade writing assessment changes, test is on April 16th
    • • Students having to read an article, extra 65 minutes to read and write on it, will have to answer a prompt on the article. They have to site evidence from the article.
    • • 6th grade should start teaching this to prepare them
    • • Can they use their own knowledge or experiences to help you answer your prompt?
  • • Technology
    • • some teachers not a fan of technology, think it is making students push too far too fast
    • • others very interested in it, think it can help students
  • • Common Core flip books
    • • helps with implementing common core strategies in the classroom
    • • Using non-fiction reading in the classroom, making students site the evidence out of the reading
    • • Use short articles, that lead to discussions and analyzing the topics.
    • • Try teaming with SS teachers to do cross curriculum topics for reading non-fiction
  • • Summer Reading Program at HTCMS
  • • Reading clubs/groups to encourage reading
  • • HTCMS - friendship theme for next year
    • • 14 novels, a couple of non-fiction, publish the list, students are able to sign up for the book they want to read, have all teachers facilitate the reading groups, having discussions regarding book
    • • Helps English department not have to focus on the summer reading for the whole 1st quarter, can start Eng curriculum at the beginning of the year, not after the summer reading is finished
    • • Reflections on book will be done in ENG class, there will be guidelines
Where do we want to be? What do we want? What can we change?
  • • Getting together in September to help get new teachers together on what is expected or to discuss new things
  • • Vocabulary
    • • Clarification on vocabulary, should it be content driven, what should we be doing
    • • Is it ok to do lit based vocabulary
    • • using new vocab in writing, with reward structure
    • • have students look at example sentences to help identify parts of grammar, covering both grammar and vocab
  • • Resource lists
    • • A way to share the tools we are using with each other
    • • Teachers-pay-teachers, teachers notebook
